Celebrating the 30th anniversary of one of the greatest albums of the 80’s, Cherry Red Records have put together a mammoth reissue of The House Of Love’s self-titled debut.
Spread over five discs, the debut album appears here in remastered form for the first time, taken from the original quarter-inch tapes. Two discs are given over to non-album tracks including numerous demos and early mixes, many of which were never released, while the final two bring together various BBC radio sessions and largely unissued live tracks with the band showcasing the album across Europe.
The package is housed in a stylish hardback book set with fresh sleeve-notes from NME journalist Neil Taylor (with interview quotes from lead singer/guitarist Guy Chadwick and original bassist Chris Groothuizen) and rare images from the band’s photographer Suzie Gibbons.… Read the rest
If it’s ever time to take the 70’s Australian pub rock scene to the world, it’s clearly now, and the vehicle for this resides in the haircuts and frenzied rumble of Amyl & The Sniffers. Having hit the UK shores late last week leaving many mouth ajar with the appearance at the Great Escape in Brighton, they followed this up with equally raucous appearances in London at Rough Trade and a couple hours later in a sweaty carnage-heavy finale at Camden Lock Tavern. … Read the rest
To get you ready for her imminent UK shows and European tour, Mattiel takes the bluesy stomp of ‘Bye Bye’ to the desert for a runaround (and rollerskate-around) in this fun video taken from her self-titled debut album, soon to be released in the UK via Heavenly.

“We went to beautiful Gothenburg to film this video,” the band say of the self-directed clip. “It has special light there, and everything tastes delicious because the air is so pure and salty. We both hate being on ships but had accidentally booked hotel rooms on an actual ship.”
A new project from David Wrench and Evangeline Ling, audiobooks released their debut EP last month.… Read the rest
With the release of their new album, Sparkle Hard, heading our way on May 18th, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks have shared an eponymous documentary short film shot on-location in Portland, OR this past January, directed by Brook Linder. It’s an intimate and brilliant glimpse into the quotidian world of Stephen Malkmus – songwriting legend, tennis champ, horseback rider, band-leader, and all-around charming goofball. “Since watching this doc,” says Stephen, “I’ve improved my tennis game immensely… I’ve shortened my follow through on the forehand and made progress on a buttery topspin backhand.”
Director Brook Linder has shared his inspiration, explaining “I have long been a Malkmus fan, and for years have thought very hard about what I would make with him given the opportunity.… Read the rest
